As part of Brighton University’s £60 million Big Build, Elm House was designed by Hassell Studio as a landmark for the Faculty of Business and Law. In collaboration with Hassell and the university’s Learning Spaces Development Team, I played an active role in shaping innovative teaching environments, finalising furniture finishes and supporting the tender documentation process for this major fit-out.

The Technology Enhanced Active Learning (TEAL) classrooms introduced custom tables, AV screens, and writable surfaces, supporting collaborative and team-based learning. These areas were designed to enhance engagement, flexibility, and digital integration, ensuring dynamic and adaptable teaching methods.

Beyond this, layouts were tailored to diverse learning styles, incorporating seminar rooms, breakout spaces, and subject-specific areas. Capacity planning was based on teaching needs while ensuring full compliance with building and fire regulations, optimising layouts for both physical and digital collaboration.

By integrating technology, adaptability, and accessibility, this project delivered future-ready learning spaces, designed to support a broad range of teaching and learning experiences.
